Ketchup? Catsup? Whatever! Hang on to those Lycopene pills!

Do you eat ketchup? What about tomato sauce? If so, you’ve probably noticed the word “Lycopene” popping up on the labels recently. Hmmm. Seems the large food companies have finally figured out the wisdom of promoting the powerful compounds found within their foods or beverages. We’re seeing the continued rise of the already gigantic category that’s come to be known as “functional foods”. Essentially, as we perceive it, at least in terms of the marketing, it’s the attempted marriage of foods with dietary supplements.
Unfortunately, many of these products, as fine as they might be in and of themselves, often fall far short in the “functional” part, because they typically don’t contain enough of the purported active ingredient to deliver a meaningful benefit to the user, despite what the label might imply.
Another potential problem is often with the consistency or regularity of usage. For example, a small dose of lycopene ingested once or twice a week probably would not deliver the same benefits as a therapeutic dose taken every day in supplement form. As far as I can tell, most of the research done on lycopene involved regular daily supplementation with doses much higher than you’d expect in your standard dollop of ketchup.
Bottom line- if you like ketchup, by all means, enjoy it. For sure, some Lycopene is better than none. Heck, we even have a best-seller that features a few milligrams as part of the mix (although we do not claim it will deliver the benefits of the full dose). But if you want to enjoy the full benefits of Lycopene, get a hold of a supplement with 15mg or more per day. In our view, the best brand of supplemental lycopene is LycoMato® – It’s the one we use (with the fill 15mg dose) in our Lycopene Omega-3 Super Formula.

Purestin – Suntheanine is great for sleep

I know a lot of folks have a little trouble getting to sleep, at least occasionally. Or maybe your issue isn’t falling asleep, but rather staying asleep. Typically I sleep like a baby (Quick interlude- why does the expression “sleep like a baby” connote deep solid undisturbed sleep?? My 2 kids, when they were babies, normally screamed half the night, either pooping themselves into a mud bath, demanding milk, or just hollering away for some inexplicable but highly interruptive reason!)…

Anyway, recently, for some reason, I noticed that I was consistently waking up in the middle of the night, and it wasn’t so easy to quickly get back to sleep. As you can imagine, I was waking up groggy, grumpy and asking myself “How many hours before I can return to my bed?”

So the first thing I thought of was that maybe I need to stick to one glass of red wine with dinner instead of two. Tried this for a few days and didn’t really help much, which was frustrating because it was the only obvious thing I had changed in my routine recently. Now while I bounce  up and down 10 or so pounds,  I’m not overweight. I run fairly consistently. I avoid sugar (most of the time). All my numbers are rock solid. I did not feel abnormally stressed out.

So I decided to call in the big guns- Purestin, our sleep supplement which features Melatonin and Suntheanine, which is just a fabulous evidence-based ingredient derived from green tea. And while I know you’re thinking “Wait a second, doesn’t this guy SELL this product? How objective can he be?” I have to say I felt the difference the first night.

We know Melatonin works. And Suntheanine is great for sleep because it basically helps you relax without having sedative properties. And Suntheanine is special because there’s actually data showing it helps you wake up feeling more refreshed.

Fortunately, it helped me here as well.  All in, it’s been 3 good nights, and mornings, in a row, and I’m excited about our future with this formulation.

Supplements are the simplest, safest way to get vitamin D

According to a recent report by Harvard Health Publications’ Harvard Heart Letter, supplements are the simplest, safest way to get vitamin D.

The report also reinforces what we’ve been saying for some time on this blog–that millions of Americans do not have enough vitamin D in their bodies, and the current RDA may not be enough for a lot of people. Also, vitamin D is not just good for bones, but for overall health as well.

Don’t just take it from us, read the letter here:

Blog Action Day 2009: Climate Change

Today is Blog Action Day 2009. This year’s topic is climate change. We’d like to share what we do at Purity Products to do our part in tackling environmental concerns.

Living “green” means knowing your “carbon footprint” and taking steps to lessen your impact. We continually look for ways to improve the energy efficiency of our operations and reduce our green house gas emissions. We also look to partner with companies that adhere to the same values.

We have been working to create a more eco-friendly, environmentally responsible work environment at our 30,000 square-foot corporate headquarters and distribution center. Here are just a few of the accomplishments that we have made:

  • Started an end of day, light and computers off policy.
  • Installed digital thermostats throughout the building.
  • Instituted a “Vacant Office, No Light Policy.”
  • All computer equipment is required to be turned off when an employee leaves for the day.
  • Replaced older high-speed printers and mailing machines with new, energy efficient models.
  • Eliminated Styrofoam cups from our employee cafeteria, and replaced them with washable, reusable mugs.
  • Initiated company-wide recycling program.

We’ve also embarked on a multi-year initiative to reduce paper consumption by closely examining what we mail and how often we are mailing. Here are several examples of ways in which we are working to be more eco-conscious in our daily business practices:

  • By simply reducing the overall paper weight of our catalog by a small margin, we will reduce our annual paper consumption by 14% without damaging the integrity of our catalog.
  • We currently work with 2 vendors who supply our shipping cartons and packing materials. Our packing paper is comprised of approximately 30% recycled material. Our boxes contain between 25% and 90% recycled materials, depending on the supplier.
  • One of our major printers, Johnson Printing and Packaging Corporation, is renowned for being a leader in environmentally friendly printing alternatives. They have Forest Stewardship Council Certification, participate in sustainable forestry, use vegetable oil and water based inks, power their facility from Wind Power Sources, and offset the remainder of their energy usage.
  • Currently, the majority of our bottles are comprised of plastic. Although this material isn’t currently made from recycled material, it is recyclable. We are working with our suppliers to research alternatives to our plastic bottles that are not only cost efficient, but either made with recycled materials, or biodegradable.
  • Our Organic Brothers™ line of products was created with the mission of creating products that are healthier for you and healthier for the planet. All of our Organic Brothers’ products are certified organic by the USDA. By their nature, organic products are greener products and embrace the following ideals:
    • Energy Conservation
    • Protection of Future Generations
    • Prevention of Soil Erosion
    • Support of Small Farmers
    • Water Quality Protection
    • Promotion of Biodiversity

Purity Products realizes that everything we do to the environment today will have implications tomorrow. That’s why reducing our carbon footprint is important to us. Whether it’s through the sustainable farming practices of our organic farming partners, membership by our printers in the Forest Stewardship Council, researching alternate fuel options, or simply turning off computers at the end of the day, we are committed to a “greener” future.
